Concrete in hotter climates like North Texas

Here in Addison, TX and pretty much all of North Texas we get very hot and humid temperatures. When it comes to installing concrete in this kind of weather it can be very challenging. This is why you see there is always concrete construction because the littliest of mistakes or small steps that aren't taken accelerate the concretes age and durability. Due to the dry weather the concrete can start to dry too quickly which leads to hairline cracking within freshly poured concrete that hasn't even fully set yet. It also makes it a lot more challenging to pour, spread and properly form the concrete because we are forced to work faster or it dries up on us. The fast evaporation and internal temperature rise can reduce the overall long term strength of the slab. How concrete cures is essential for the long term durability that concrete provides and trying to navigate in a hot climate can be very challenging.

How we make a difference at Addison Concrete is we make sure to add mixtures like concrete retarders and water reducers to slow down the drying time, and improve the workability without having to drench it with a lot more water which  weakens the concrete. Also If possible, usually its harder with residential work but whenever we have the opportunity we try and do our concrete work before or after sunrise to avoid the peak temperature's. Another huge thing we like to do is pre-wet the sub grade of the concrete because what usually happens is when the underlying subgrade is dry it tends to suck out all that moisture we need in the concrete out and directly into the ground. So to fix this we wet all the subgrade and allow a clean lay of fresh new concrete on top keeping it still at a good moisture content to cure at a good pace. We also use evaporation retardants or surface misters in certain scenarios so we can prevent specifically the top layer of the concrete from drying too quickly as that is the most vulnerable area to start drying too quickly and crack. All these little tricks a lot of times aren't needed in other climates where its not as hot but with the Texas heat. Every little trick really helps when trying to form and cure concrete properly.
